Anya began to play the violin aged 5 and when she was 7 was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has subsequently studied at the Escuela Superior De Musica FAMA, in Madrid and has just completed a postgraduate diploma in performance (with distinction) at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was awarded the South Square Scholarship to study with the internationally renowned soloists Lydia Mordkovitch and Richard Deakin. Anya made her concerto debut when she was 13 playing Mozart’s 3rd violin concerto in Cambridge with the K239 Chamber Orchestra and has since played many concertos with other orchestras around the UK, including winning the concerto prize at the Junior Guildhall. In her duo partnership with Rosie Richardson Anya gave a televised recital as part of the Bellapais International Music Festival, Cyprus, they also played at other venues including St Martin in the Fields and the Wigmore Hall. Solo and chamber recital opportunities have taken Anya all over the world, including France, Austria, Switzerland, Romania, the USA and most recently Zimbabwe and South Africa where she appeared on South African national Radio as part of the Indaba New Music Festival 2008. Anya now enjoys a varied musical career, recent highlights of which include perfoming Messiaen’s Theme et Variations live on BBC radio 3 and also in the Southbank’s Messiaen Festival, playing at the 2008 Aldeburgh festival, playing regularly with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra, and playing for many West End Shows including Phantom of the Opera, as well has her teaching work at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music and Blackheath High School for Girls.
Anya Birchall was born in
Cambridge, in 1982. When she was 5 she began to learn the violin, taught by
her mother. At the age of 7 she was awarded a scholarship to study at the
Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she learnt with Pauline
Scott, and Katharine Gowers. Anya was 13 when she made her concerto debut,
playing Mozart's third violin concerto with the K239 Chamber Orchestra in
Cambridge. At 16, Anya won a concerto prize at Junior Guildhall, which
resulted in a performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Junior
Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. Whilst at Guildhall Anya formed both a duo and
a piano trio with whom she performed extensively, including participating in
masterclasses at the Wigmore Hall with both David Dolan and the Vienna Piano
Trio. From 1990-1996 Anya was a member and leader of the National Children's
Orchestra. At 16 she was invited to participate in a
master-course with Serguei Fatkouline, and it is with him that she now
studies. Anya is a member of the Escuela Superior de Musica FAMA, Madrid , in
the class of Professor Fatkouline. Anya has performed all over the world,
most recently in France , Scotland , Hungary and Spain . In May 2004, as part
of her duo with Rosie Richardson, she was invited to give a televised
performance in the North Cyprus International Music Festival. Future
engagements include the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Suffolk Sinfonia,
and a recital in Romania. |
