George Corbett was picked out by Benjamin Zander as a ‘natural conductor’ while playing cello as a student at Chetham’s School of Music, in Manchester. He has worked as assistant conductor to Steven Cleobury and Peter Stark, most recently conducting and preparing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with CUMS 1. George has conducted all the major university orchestras in Cambridge. Recent performances include Mahler 4 (with CUSO), Shostakovich 6 (with the Cambridge Graduate Orchestra), and Tchaikovsky 6 (with CUMS 1). George directed The Trinity Singers, whose membership grew from ten to over a hundred singers during his tenure. As Artistic Director of the Cambridge University Opera Society he has overseen a number of opera productions, and conducted a sell-out run of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the ADC theatre. He has also been invited to guest conduct orchestras, and has conducted two highly successful tours to Budapest and Prague.

Aside from conducting, as a cellist, George has performed as a concerto soloist across Britain and Europe, including with the Arad Philharmonic while on tour to Romania, and with Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall and Royal College of Music. He has won numerous prizes and was national string finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year. He has recorded a CD of contemporary works by the American composer Katherine Freeze, and this year records David Earl’s sonata for cello and piano with James Sherlock. He teaches annually on the Oxford Cello School and on Es Muss Sein. George Corbett currently combines a busy performance career as conductor and cellist with a research scholarship at Trinity College.
